A trilogy in two parts!
So the quality was listed as acceptable and for me it definitely is given how long I've been searching for this book! Was a bit confused when I picked up the package and felt two distinct moving bits. Thought maybe it was three separate books for a moment, being a trilogy I could see that, but it doesn't explain where the third bit is. Ever the optimist I figured mb it's small enough that I'm missing it, stranger things have happened. But for someone used to identifying the type and orientation of computer ports by finger tip it was unlikely. And yeah I wasn't wrong there were only two items. Seem kinda odd for a trilogy? I agree! Turns out the book broke in half at some point. It's a 15 year old printing of a 30 some odd (or even) year old book and looks like it was in fact well loved. If not the best cared for.Like I said, definitely was acceptable state to me, but I may get some supplies and turn it into a hardcover book sometime in the near future.

Definitive Escapism
I enjoyed this book. It is your basic sorcery/fantasy escapism, and I really like that sort of thing. This is the first book by Eddings I have ever read, and am looking forward to reading more of his works. If you like fantasies that are set in the usual medieval surroundings (complete with castles, serfs, and vast stretchs of largely uncivilized land) you'll probably like this. If you like not having to worry too much about whether the main character will live to see the end of the book, and the fact that most of the bad guys will probably meet suitably grisely ends, you'll probably enjoy this. If you like swords, theives and beautiful queens, you'll probably like it. It's not going to change your life; you won't be inspired to be a better person and you won't have a sudden, deeper understanding of the world, but I think that's ok. Not every book needs to do that to be worth the read. If you want a way out of the world for a little while: maybe the bills are a little too high, or the family is getting to be a challange, or maybe you aren't feeling good, this is a good book to slip away with. After all, you can't (or, at least, probably shouldn't) drop everything and run. Responsiblities are important, but everyone needs a break. Is this the best of its kind I've ever read? No. The characters are good but not brilliant, the plot is interesting but not terribly unique. The romance is frankly ham-fisted, and, as another reviewer said, a teensy bit disturbing (I am never really comfortable with romances between young girls and the men that raise them, related or not, never mind the fact that the author never really convinced me that the hero was truly in love with the girl to begin with. You know she loves him, in the way that all teens love, and you know he loves her, but he usually seems to love her as a father loves a daughter, and when things progress, it's just hard to switch the gears)Thankfully, the romance is not the starring plot. Sparhawk is usually fighting or traveling rather than making love, and while I love a good romance (Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorites) I infinately prefer it this way in this book. This book is humourous, interesting, and ends satisfactorily. I'm glad I got it!

Got this book for my teenage grandson
I've read David Eddings and absolutely love his books. I've reread this series many many times and my grandson was wanting a good book. This book has knights, battles, magic, love, tragedy, betrayal, heroes and so much more. He throughly enjoyed it.

Loved all three books, 5 stars all around!
Okay, so I loved this book, I am totally into the story, and glad that I bought the entire trilogy at once. I hate finishing a book and not having the next ready and waiting. There was not a whole lot of resolution at the end of the first book, in fact, it seems to me that this probably should have just been one really long book. But, unlike the Song of Ice and Fire series (George R.R. Martin), I was not so exhausted at the end of the first book and in need of a break from the series that the lack of resolution irritated me. Rather, it made me want to read on immediatly! If there were a dragon or two...maybe an elf or a dwarf, I'd have been totally captivated. As it stands, Sparhawk, Talon, Flute, Kalten for sure...love em! I've made it a point not to get too attached to Sephrenia, but I'm just wary like that. (Though I am a little concerned that Kalten was one of the twelve, but I may just be being paranoid.)Now that I've read them both, I like this series even better than the Belgariad.

Mediocre
I have read this trilogy before a long time ago and thought I'd revisit it (mainly as I couldn't find a kindle version of the Belgariad).I didn't remember the plot at all so it was like reading it for the first time, which I guess is telling, as I remember other books by Eddings a lot better. It's not a patch on his earlier stuff, the dialogue is terrible, every character pretty much has the exact same awful, smug sense of humour and I didn't find any of them likeable. There wasn't really enough to them to like. The plot was pretty awful too, at the start they can't accuse someone without irrevocable proof but later they're happily chopping heads off the same group without a second thought.I forced myself to read the whole trilogy but definitely won't be starting the next one.

Read these when they were issued...
Just read them again. I still like them. It's kind of bath-time+ reading, easy going, but with enough depth to keep you interested, and enough of a page turner to guarantee ridiculously long baths. The plot is Sparhawk, knight, queens champion, all round good guy with anger issues is trying to save queen by recovering a magical relic. It's heavy on the sword side, less so on the sorcery. What makes it work is the character development, you really start to feel you know them, their issues, fears, aspirations. Overlaid with a lot of sardonic humour and you get a great book, In my humble opinion anyway. In short, if you can tolerate a bit of sword and sorcery, you won't be disappointed.

A great collection of Eddings books
This compendium covers all the books in the series. We downloaded it for Kindle. If you know the story, then you'll love these. The paperbacks we have are showing years of wear, so this just makes sense. Great stories, told with Eddings' usual accessable, involving style. he knows how to paint a picture, create great characters and keep the reader enthralled. I've read these many, many times and still enjoy them and now my child is going through the same process.
P**.
It's already in the bin.
It's appalling that they think it's okay to sell anything in this state. The tape was my doing, as it wouldn't have survived the two minutes to take the pictures otherwise. A full refund, including packaging and post (hah packaging - that was awful too!) would be appropriate, along with a sincere apology. A no-star rating also should be added for this.

another triumph for David Eddings
Superb read. Good characters. Great story line. Slightly easier than lord of the rings though! I have read all of Eddings books multiple times and the never cease to entertain
