What kind of wood is used for natural cubes

Not sure. Some light grain hardwood. Possibly alder or maple.

Why don't they cut the wood at an angle (in the corner edges - the wood that creates the X shape)? It looks lazy that there is a gap in the corners.

Pretty much lazy/easy craftsmanship. Could easily be made at home without much effort. It does look good full of wine though. The corner edges don’t stand out.
