The book came in superb condition, but Doniger’s uninteresting translation, lacking commentary and unrelated references makes for a boring read.

I am fairly unfamiliar with Hindu mythology, so I was very excited to get this collection. I can't speak for the translation job, but it was an enjoyable read.

Very hard to follow at times. Came promptly and was in great condition but was disappointed with the actual book. There's probably a better Hindu Myths book that isn't so hard to understand or to follow.

I ordered this book for a class im taking and was thrilled when i received it. Although i received an older version of the book all the same information was present in the text so i didnt mind. The book was also very well maintained and looked like one of those old library treasures that was hidden on some shelf for many a year until just recently found... nonetheless very happy. Oh and the myths in the book are pretty interesting too; its a fun read that can make you think.

Hindu Myths: A Sourcebook Translated from the Sanskrit (Penguin Classics) (ASIN: B002RI9QCQ)This is a selected collection of 75 stories from an assortment of Hindu texts including the Puranas, Rig Veda, Upanishads. Ramayana, Bhagavad-Gita and the epic Mahabharata. This wasn’t the easiest book to grasp but I thought it explained well book explains how these different Hindu texts are an off-shoot of the original which now co-exist alongside each other to support the varying belief systems of different Hindu groups.

I was rather expecting more commentary on each myth, with historical and cultural context or explanations, but really it's just a list of myths translated from each source in which they're found. Profoundly boring, and had the potential for so much more.

Expected atleast an attempt that Myths will be elaborated with scientific, historic or philosophical perspectives, but NO.Ueless book for Indian readers as most of the myths are heard at homes. Readers should instead go forDevDutt Patnaik,s books on Myths. They offer better insights.

It gave me immense insight into the Hindu religion, of which I, like many others, am an ignorant practitioner.The translation of the chapter on Ram and Sita, taken from The Valmiki Ramayana, is the most powerful piece of prose that I have ever read, though I have read various translations of the epic earlier.
