Nope. It does not need to be off the finger to spin, and...well...I suppose one could use it as a fidget toy. I've never needed a fidget toy before, but I have found myself spinning the ring for no particular reason. It's also a great conversation piece and I have fun putting coded messages in my youngin's lunch bag.BTW, careful if you wear it at the shore. If any sand gets stuck in it, it will stop spinning.

Do the numbers or symbols fade over time?

Mine haven't. Then again, I don't wear mine all the time. On their own, though, they will not fade.
